Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), is the Premier Centre of Excellence in Ghana for teaching and training education in Science and Technology. The Department of Land Economy at KNUST is at the forefront of land governance research in Ghana. Currently, KNUST runs two undergraduate programmes in BSc Land Economy and BSc Real Estate; and an MSc Land Governance and Policy as well as MSc Facilities Management degrees. There is also a PhD degree Programme in Land Management for doctoral research. The University also has a strong network with institutions, professionals and practitioners in the land sector at both local and international levels. Against these backgrounds, KNUST was selected as the regional Node for Anglophone West Africa.
To date, under the NELGA Scholarship Programme, KNUST has granted 13 scholarships (6 MSc and 7 PhD’s) for students studying planning and land related courses in Ghana.
The key activities of the NELGA Node and partner institutions in West Africa include:
- Create a NELGA Hub in West Africa at the Department of Land Economy as the lead department for NELGA in West Africa.
- Consolidate, deepen and widen networks and academic exchange with relevant West African universities and stakeholders in land governance sector.
- Conduct collaborative research activities to improve understanding of land governance issues in West Africa region.
- Identify and institute a knowledge creation and management strategy for the sharing, retention and retrieval of land governance information and of best practices in land governance in West Africa.
